The Call For Imam Jamil Abdullah Al-Amin. An action-oriented follow-up to the May 3rd Appeals Hearing. “You are the best of nations raised up for humanity; you enjoin the good and forbid the evil.” The Noble Qu’ran (3:110) Imam Jamil Abdullah Al-Amin gained prominence more than 50 years ago as a young firebrand activist by the name of H. Rap Brown. In the 1960s he became one of the most prominent leaders of the Student Nonviolent Coordinating Committee (SNCC), and one of the most recognized figures in the African-American freedom struggle.
Following his conversion to Islam, and release from prison for his resistance activities, he moved to Atlanta (GA) in the 1970s and led one of the nation’s largest Muslim groups, Al-Ummah. On the night of March 16, 2000 – on the eve of Eid ul-Adha (one of the two major holidays in the Muslim calendar) – Imam Jamil is alleged to have gotten into a gunfight with two Fulton County sheriff deputies who were on the West End of Atlanta to serve a warrant that many argue never should have been issued.
Two years later Imam Jamil was convicted of “murder” in the death of Deputy Ricky Kinchen, and the malicious wounding of Deputy Aldranon English. While the state pursued the death penalty, Imam Jamil ended up being sentenced to life in prison. He has spent most of the past two decades in brutal solitary confinement; but while no longer in America’s “supermax” prison, he still remains cut off from the academics, journalists, historians and others who would like to have access to this still controversial figure in American history. On May 3, 2019, supporters of Imam Jamil packed a courtroom in downtown Atlanta, where a three-judge panel of the 11th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals heard arguments in the constitutional challenge to his ongoing imprisonment and request for a new trial. There are a number of important issues at the heart of Imam Jamil’s appeal: from a constitutional violation that the court acknowledges occurred, to the omission from the trial of a man who had earlier confessed to being the assailant who shot the sheriff’s deputies on March 16, 2000. Imam Jamil, his family and supporters, are still awaiting the decision of the court.

On Sept. 3, 2015, the Jericho Movement received an email from a political prisoner at U.S. Penitentiary Canaan, a high security prison in Waymart, Penn., concerning Imam Jamil. The sender said that the imam was in serious need of medical attention.
His jaw was swollen to at least twice its normal size, and he is in a lot of pain. We were told that the institution had been on lockdown for two weeks, which is why no word had gotten out earlier.
A family member was later able to speak with Imam Jamil and confirms the information. Someone from the Jericho Medical Committee will contact the prison clinical director to see what, if any, medical info can be gotten from the institution.
Please call or fax USP Canaan and ask – demand – that Imam Jamil be given immediate adequate medical attention. A more detailed statement will be forthcoming.

Update on Biopsy Results for Imam Jamil Abdullah Al-Amin
On July 23, 2014, at the Butner FMC, Imam Jamil had a bone marrow biopsy to determine the presence of myeloma cells. Yesterday, Kairi and I visited with him at Butner, and today he was told by the Butner medical staff that the biopsy results revealed “some myeloma cells.” He was told he needed to be monitored and tested every two to three months to determine if his condition has advanced to the full multiple myeloma stage. He would not remain at the hospital and could be monitored at another facility. The pre-cursor condition is called monoclonal gammopathy of undetermined significance (MGUS). This raises the issue that more than likely he will be returned to Florence ADX until he has another episode. The sunlight has helped him at Butner, but I still am worried about his weight loss and the fact that he would be moved out of Butner so quickly. We are working tomorrow to contact Congressional reps, although many are away on vacations. The thought is that if he is moved back, it will be difficult to get him back out of Florence short of his becoming deathly ill. We will have to go public once again with the BOP’s decision to return him to the same institution that failed to recognize his medical condition until public pressure was exerted. He needs to be close to medical providers who are skilled with monitoring his condition, and Florence ADX lacks that capability. Meanwhile, we are working on obtaining his medical records from Butner, so that we can involve our physicians in evaluating the findings, making recommendations, and monitoring Imam Jamil’s condition. H. Rap Brown In Declining Health; Supporters Demand Medical Attention

"The 1960s radical H. Rap Brown, currently serving a life sentence without parole for the murder of a Fulton County, Georgia Deputy Sheriff, is now facing deteriorating health issues.
Brown, a 70-year-old Muslim cleric, now goes by the name of Jamil Al-Amin. He is serving time at a federal institution, the ADX Florence Supermax Prison in Florence, Colorado, despite being convicted of state crimes.
According to a statement released by the National Black Alliance Network, Al-Amin “needs emergency medical care without delay, in accordance with federal prison standards. His life is at risk.”
This week, NBAN released an update of Al-Amin’s status. As of Sunday night, June 8, 2014, Al-Amin suffered from an abscess on each side of his mouth, which has caused “… an inability to breathe and the total shutdown of his body.”
A dentist recently removed a broken tooth and Al-Amin is unable to eat. He is reported to be too weak to walk and his feet are swollen on both the top and the bottom.
Al-Amin’s supporters contend that he has not received adequate medical treatment. They cite a recent visit by a physician of Nigerian lineage, who “talked to him through a cell door.”
Supporters are calling for mass protests and for a telephone campaign to demand that Al-Amin receive adequate medical attention. On Monday of this week, the group held a rally in front of the Bureau of Prisons headquarters in the District of Columbia.
El-Hajj Mauri’ Saalakhan said his group has three demands for the BOP: 1. “Immediate medical attention for inmate Jamil Abdullah Al-Amin (Reg # 99974-555)”
2. “A transfer to the prison medical facility located in Butner, North Carolina”
3. “A review of imprisonment policies relevant to the prisoners being housed under extraordinary conditions, such as the Supermax in Florence, Colorado, and the so-called ‘Controlled Management Units’ in different parts of the country.”
Al-Amin, who once said that “violence is as American as apple pie,” has been in jail since March 24, 2000. He was arrested in the shooting death of a Fulton County, Georgia Deputy Sheriff, who was attempting to serve an arrest warrant issued by a Cobb County, Georgia judge. He was apprehended dressed in full-body armor, in Green County, Alabama, where he had organized voter rights marches in the mid-1960s as Chairman of the Student Non-Violent Coordinating Committee. In the vicinity of his arrest, the authorities found, his bullet-riddled automobile and two guns later linked to the death of the Deputy Sheriff. After his conviction, Al-Amin was initially housed in a maximum security facility in Georgia, but in 2007, state prison authorities feared they could not withstand an escape attempt, and he was whisked away via helicopter in the middle of the night to the Supermax in Colorado.
His supporters counter that Al-Amin had become very popular with the other inmates and the Georgia authorities feared Al-Amin, ever the community organizer, would lead an inmate protest over living conditions. For the past seven years, Al-Amin has been subjected to enforced isolation and its twin, “sensory deprivation,” from the lack of adequate sunlight. During a brief period of time, when SNCC had joined forces with the Black Panther Party, Al-Amin served the group as Minister of Justice. Now his followers are seeking justice in the manner in which his medical condition is being treated.
