The Call For Imam Jamil Abdullah Al-Amin. An action-oriented follow-up to the May 3rd Appeals Hearing. “You are the best of nations raised up for humanity; you enjoin the good and forbid the evil.” The Noble Qu’ran (3:110) Imam Jamil Abdullah Al-Amin gained prominence more than 50 years ago as a young firebrand activist by the name of H. Rap Brown. In the 1960s he became one of the most prominent leaders of the Student Nonviolent Coordinating Committee (SNCC), and one of the most recognized figures in the African-American freedom struggle.
Following his conversion to Islam, and release from prison for his resistance activities, he moved to Atlanta (GA) in the 1970s and led one of the nation’s largest Muslim groups, Al-Ummah. On the night of March 16, 2000 – on the eve of Eid ul-Adha (one of the two major holidays in the Muslim calendar) – Imam Jamil is alleged to have gotten into a gunfight with two Fulton County sheriff deputies who were on the West End of Atlanta to serve a warrant that many argue never should have been issued.
Two years later Imam Jamil was convicted of “murder” in the death of Deputy Ricky Kinchen, and the malicious wounding of Deputy Aldranon English. While the state pursued the death penalty, Imam Jamil ended up being sentenced to life in prison. He has spent most of the past two decades in brutal solitary confinement; but while no longer in America’s “supermax” prison, he still remains cut off from the academics, journalists, historians and others who would like to have access to this still controversial figure in American history. On May 3, 2019, supporters of Imam Jamil packed a courtroom in downtown Atlanta, where a three-judge panel of the 11th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals heard arguments in the constitutional challenge to his ongoing imprisonment and request for a new trial. There are a number of important issues at the heart of Imam Jamil’s appeal: from a constitutional violation that the court acknowledges occurred, to the omission from the trial of a man who had earlier confessed to being the assailant who shot the sheriff’s deputies on March 16, 2000. Imam Jamil, his family and supporters, are still awaiting the decision of the court.
On Friday, July 26, 2019 as folk converge in Atlanta from around the US for The 36th Annual Riyaadah, a support rally for Imam Jamil Abdullah Al-Amin will be held in front of The CNN Center in downtown Atlanta – at the intersection of Marietta Street & Centennial Olympic Park Dr (starting time is 4 PM). This mobilization is being led by The Aafia Foundation, Inc. and the Imam Jamil Action Network (IJAN) – with the endorsement of Al-Ummah.
