The Call For Imam Jamil Abdullah Al-Amin. An action-oriented follow-up to the May 3rd Appeals Hearing. “You are the best of nations raised up for humanity; you enjoin the good and forbid the evil.” The Noble Qu’ran (3:110) Imam Jamil Abdullah Al-Amin gained prominence more than 50 years ago as a young firebrand activist by the name of H. Rap Brown. In the 1960s he became one of the most prominent leaders of the Student Nonviolent Coordinating Committee (SNCC), and one of the most recognized figures in the African-American freedom struggle.
Following his conversion to Islam, and release from prison for his resistance activities, he moved to Atlanta (GA) in the 1970s and led one of the nation’s largest Muslim groups, Al-Ummah. On the night of March 16, 2000 – on the eve of Eid ul-Adha (one of the two major holidays in the Muslim calendar) – Imam Jamil is alleged to have gotten into a gunfight with two Fulton County sheriff deputies who were on the West End of Atlanta to serve a warrant that many argue never should have been issued.
Two years later Imam Jamil was convicted of “murder” in the death of Deputy Ricky Kinchen, and the malicious wounding of Deputy Aldranon English. While the state pursued the death penalty, Imam Jamil ended up being sentenced to life in prison. He has spent most of the past two decades in brutal solitary confinement; but while no longer in America’s “supermax” prison, he still remains cut off from the academics, journalists, historians and others who would like to have access to this still controversial figure in American history. On May 3, 2019, supporters of Imam Jamil packed a courtroom in downtown Atlanta, where a three-judge panel of the 11th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals heard arguments in the constitutional challenge to his ongoing imprisonment and request for a new trial. There are a number of important issues at the heart of Imam Jamil’s appeal: from a constitutional violation that the court acknowledges occurred, to the omission from the trial of a man who had earlier confessed to being the assailant who shot the sheriff’s deputies on March 16, 2000. Imam Jamil, his family and supporters, are still awaiting the decision of the court.

On Sept. 3, 2015, the Jericho Movement received an email from a political prisoner at U.S. Penitentiary Canaan, a high security prison in Waymart, Penn., concerning Imam Jamil. The sender said that the imam was in serious need of medical attention.
His jaw was swollen to at least twice its normal size, and he is in a lot of pain. We were told that the institution had been on lockdown for two weeks, which is why no word had gotten out earlier.
A family member was later able to speak with Imam Jamil and confirms the information. Someone from the Jericho Medical Committee will contact the prison clinical director to see what, if any, medical info can be gotten from the institution.

Imam Jamil has smoldering myeloma, which is an inactive form of multiple myeloma. Individuals with smoldering myeloma generally are monitored without receiving treatment, although there are studies that indicate early intervention with medication could prevent the progression to active multiple myeloma.
The physicians at Butner FMC have not recommended that Imam Jamil receive any medication for his smoldering myeloma. They agree that he should be monitored and tested every two to three months to determine any progression of his condition. Imam Jamil has other medical conditions, which have not been addressed adequately at the Butner FMC.
1. Ask that Jamil Al-Amin is NOT returned to Florence ADX, and Request that he is NOT placed in solitary confinement because of his chronic medical state.
2. Request that Jamil Al-Amin is held - pending his appeals - at Butner, NC or a Georgia state facility to have access to his team of attorneys.

For two months, Imam Jamil Al-Amin has undergone tests at the Butner FMC as a result of our successful campaign to have him transferred out of the Florence ADX to the federal medical center.
The campaign was necessary to bring attention to his failing medical health that the Florence ADX continued to ignore. For those who joined us in advocating on behalf of Imam Jamil, and to those who have sent letters and cards to him, we continue to extend our appreciation.

Update on Biopsy Results for Imam Jamil Abdullah Al-Amin
On July 23, 2014, at the Butner FMC, Imam Jamil had a bone marrow biopsy to determine the presence of myeloma cells. Yesterday, Kairi and I visited with him at Butner, and today he was told by the Butner medical staff that the biopsy results revealed “some myeloma cells.” He was told he needed to be monitored and tested every two to three months to determine if his condition has advanced to the full multiple myeloma stage. He would not remain at the hospital and could be monitored at another facility. The pre-cursor condition is called monoclonal gammopathy of undetermined significance (MGUS). This raises the issue that more than likely he will be returned to Florence ADX until he has another episode. The sunlight has helped him at Butner, but I still am worried about his weight loss and the fact that he would be moved out of Butner so quickly. We are working tomorrow to contact Congressional reps, although many are away on vacations. The thought is that if he is moved back, it will be difficult to get him back out of Florence short of his becoming deathly ill. We will have to go public once again with the BOP’s decision to return him to the same institution that failed to recognize his medical condition until public pressure was exerted. He needs to be close to medical providers who are skilled with monitoring his condition, and Florence ADX lacks that capability. Meanwhile, we are working on obtaining his medical records from Butner, so that we can involve our physicians in evaluating the findings, making recommendations, and monitoring Imam Jamil’s condition. Even-though we were initially jubilant about our success in having Jamil Al-Amin/ H. "Rap' Brown moved to a medical facility, we were already aware that our work was not finished. We have every reason to fear that he may be returned to solitary confinement or/ and back to Colorado. We cannot allow that to happen. Drawing from the people who came together in Jackson and their circles, we have formed the Emergency Committee on Humanitarian Aid for Jamil Al- Amin/ H. "Rap" Brown. We are creating a committee of medical people to send the attached letter to the director of prisons. Please remember that this is not an argument about the innocence or guilt of Jamil; it is about the inhumanity of keeping a person in solitary confinement for 13 years and denying him medical care.
We are writing for two reasons. If you know of medical people who would be willing to sign the letter, please contact them, show them the letter and have the person email me atfrushing@ben.edu. If you are willing to have your name listed as a member of the committee, email me with that information. Both are urgent. We want to fax the first letter to the director tomorrow or the next day at the latest. This will be an ongoing campaign.
If you know someone who might sign the letter and you cannot get them today, please continue to try and get them. We will be sending more than one letter. We need to make the state realize that there is a broad base of support for this case.

In 2007, Georgia prison officials moved Jamil Abdullah Al-Amin, without notice, 1400 miles away to USP ADMAX (supermax prison) in Florence, Colorado. Isolation, sensor deprivation, sensory overload and inhumane conditions are the norm in superemax prisons, especially in Florence. Under these conditions his health has deteriorated.
He waited 10 months to see a dentist and after seeing one, his condition worsened. Subsequently, he waited an additional five months after submitting a dental request to see another. After obtaining test results in June of 2014, Jamil Abdullah Al-Amin #99974-555 needs to obtain an immediate transfer to the best suited federal medical center designed to perform a bone marrow biopsy and determine the best course of treatment.
We, the undersigned are requesting that he obtain an immediate transfer to the best suited federal medical center designed to perform a bone marrow biopsy and determine the best course of treatment. Jamil Al-Amin's grave condition requires high specialization and we are demanding that the objective standards are met. Imam Jamil Al-Amin currently experiences serious and substantial risks to his health. These problems are obviously visible within his lack of desires to recreation, difficulty in eating, rapid weight loss, difficulties in breathing and carrying out normal daily functions. His feet are swollen, top and bottom, he remains lethargic, and is in need of an urgent medical transfer to the best suited federal medical center designed to perform a bone marrow biopsy and determine the best course of treatment.
